Quantum Adiabatic Algorithms and Large Spin Tunnelling

چکیده
We provide a theoretical study of the quantum adiabatic evolution algorithm with different evolution paths proposed in [ 11. The algorithm is applied to a random binary optimization problem (a version of the 3-Satisfiability problem) where the n-bit cost function is symmetric with respect to the permutation of individual bits. The evolution paths are produced, using the generic control Hamiltonians H ( r ) that preserve the bit symmetry of the underlying optimization problem. In the case where the ground state of H ( 0 ) coincides with the totally-symmetric state of an n-qubit system the algorithm dynamics is completely described in terms of the motion of a spin-n/2. We show that different control Hamiltonians can be parameterized by a set of independent parameters that are expansion coefficients of H ( r ) in a certain universal set of operators. Only one of these operators can be responsible for avoiding the tunnelling in the spin-n/2 system during the quantum adiabatic algorithm. We show that it is possible to select a coefficient for this operator that guarantees a polynomial complexity of the algorithm for all problem instances. We show that a successful evolution path of the algorithm always corresponds to the trajectory of a classical spin-n/2 and provide a complete characterization of such paths.

High-performance Energy Minimization with Applications to Adiabatic Quantum Computing
Energy minimization of Ising spin-glasses has played a central role in statistical and solid-state physics, facilitating studies of phase transitions and magnetism. Recent proposals suggest using Ising spin-glasses for non-traditional computing as a way to harness the nature’s ability to find min-energy configurations, and to take advantage of quantum tunneling to boost combinatorial optimizati...

Motivated by the experimental observations of resonant tunnelings in the systems with half-integer spin, such as V15 and Mn4, we study the mechanism of adiabatic change of the magnetization in systems with the time-reversal symmetry. Within the time-reversal symmetric models, effects of several types of perturbations are investigated. Although tunneling between the ground states is suppressed i...
متن کاملBrownian motion and quantum dynamics of magnetic monopoles in spin ice
Spin ice illustrates many unusual magnetic properties, including zero point entropy, emergent monopoles and a quasi liquid-gas transition. To reveal the quantum spin dynamics that underpin these phenomena is an experimental challenge. Here we show how crucial information is contained in the frequency dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and in its high frequency or adiabatic limit. The typ...
متن کاملThe Quantum Adiabatic Algorithm applied to random optimization problems: the quantum spin glass perspective
Among various algorithms designed to exploit the specific properties of quantum computers with respect to classical ones, the quantum adiabatic algorithm is a versatile proposition to find the minimal value of an arbitrary cost function (ground state energy). Random optimization problems provide a natural testbed to compare its efficiency with that of classical algorithms. These problems corres...
متن کاملNonlinearity-assisted quantum tunnelling in a matter-wave interferometer
We investigate the nonlinearity-assisted quantum tunnelling and formation of nonlinear collective excitations in a matter-wave interferometer, which is realized by the adiabatic transformation of a double-well potential into a singlewell harmonic trap. In contrast to the linear quantum tunnelling induced by the crossing (or avoided crossing) of neighbouring energy levels, the quantum tunnelling...
